Stopped by the city square this afternoon for some bird seed (far cheaper at the local feed store for the good stuff) and while waiting in the turn lane to get back on the main drag, saw two LARGE hawks swoop down in front of one of the local businesses and one grabbed something off the sidewalk before flying away in the opposite direction (away from me). Nicely dark colored from the back but between the mix of shadows and sun, I couldn't really get any detail on either of the birds nor what kind of critter it was carrying.
I know we have red tails around the area but didn't think they got this big, perhaps 30-35" across wingtip to wingtip (?). Huge! Rather big bodied creatures and even dodging parked cars, sidewalk awnings, and so on, incredibly agile and graceful.
While my first thought was that the bird grabbed a kitten or small puppy off the sidewalk, I don't know that to be true and it could have easily been just another pidgeon of which we seem to have plenty.
Do red tails get that big or perhaps another raptor that doesn't mind city conditions? The whole thing was rather shocking to be sure since it happened not 100' away from where I sat in my truck...
