Camera Exchange in San Antonio -Fail - 01-04-2011, 01:31 PM

This is to you Camera Exchange in San Antonio. I can not understand why stores like them complain that the internet companies are putting them out of business, when they are their own worst enemy. I need to rent a lens for work for this weekend. We needed to secure it on the company card. They wouldn't do it because the CEO, whose name the card is in, would have to personally bring the card in and sign the ticket. No one we do business with makes us do that. I rent a ton of lenses for work during the course of the year. I recently found out they have lens rental and decided to keep the business local. They won't, so I can't. And yet they still complain about losing business. ALL my photo business is going on-line now!!

I would look at it from a general consumer point of view...

How would you like it if your card was stolen and used at a store where they accepted it? As a consumer, hell no, I dont want the store charging the card until it's validated by a picture ID.

They reduce the risk of losing inventory and dealing with lost goods.

Ditto Ken and Sean. It's nice to hear of a store that actually treats cards the way they should be treated. I wish more stores would do that.

Camera Exchange does fail in a lot of ways, based on my one visit there, but this isn't one of them.

I guess you refuse to use any of those fly-by-night thief enablers like B&H, Amazon, etc. that will take a credit card without even so much as a phone call, then.

Not really the same thing as what the OP is talking about or Ken. If I call B&H right now and tell them my name is joe blow ship it to me and place it on suzy Q's card they are going to verify with suzy Q's bank. I know this because they did this to me this past summer and I have shopped there for years but because the shipping destination was not that for the address on the card it got checked.

I agree. However, I also agree that having the CEO personally come in for each and every transaction sounds a bit drastic, too. I think the answer is in the middle. They need a form that an employee can bring in, giving him/her permission to use a corporate card with the CEO's name on it... not just take their word on it, but not require the CEO to be there every time.

It's simple. If this is a company card it's as simple as contacting the company for a list of authorized users.

If you rent that much equipment, why doesn't the company just get a card issued to you. My company did that for me, and I haven't even used it in two years.

Here is a novel idea, have the business issue a card in your name. My employer, provides me with a Corporate AmEx card in my name. I am responsible for all charges made with the card but if I file an expense report, the company will pay AmEx directly for those business purchases.

I know asking for a photo ID before taking a credit card is a good idea, but requiring a photo ID is actually against the terms of service retailers agree to when setting up to take credit cards.
