WOW!! That was really cool!

So there were NO cushions on those seats?!

I noticed that myself: I used to work with a gentleman that flew one while we were bombing tokyo at the end of the war: he said they were quite often stretching the limits on fuel, and were in the air for extended periods: I never really grasped the significance of that until I saw those seats in this picture.. Too much experience with Boeing and Lockheed cushy seats....

As for the seat cushions - I think they sat on their parachutes.

Yep, that's it: I had forgotten entirely about that factor. A chute on the back and a secondary chute hanging below, which could have formed the "bottom" pad..
