Okay, I try and take care of my iPhone, but I didn't do a good job. Took it out of my case at home so I could put it in my arm band when I got to the gym, Short story long, it fell, hit the ground and the back of it cracked. It's cosmetic and doesn't affect the performance of the phone. The problem is that if I want to get it fixed by Apple, I'm going to have to pay $199... what I paid for the phone initially!
I know there have been places to take iPhones to have the screens replaced. Does anyone know of, or can recommend places that can repair iPhones outside of Apple? Ridiculous to have to pay that kind of money for a simple repair.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!
Jeff

A longshot maybe, but try to find a non-working iPhone 4 with an intact back on CL, and then swap out the backs using Ifixit's guide?

There are some places in town that fix iPhones. One place in Dallas, Frisco and Hurst is OnSite Cellular Repair. I've heard their screen replacement was about $70 (on a 3GS). Much better alternative than Apple.

Great info, guys! Especially the video link Mike posted. Didn't realize it was that easy! It's something I can do myself without hesitation!

The back of mine had a hairline crack in it, that didn't affect it's performance but I couldn't live with it, so I went to Apple with the intention of just buying a new phone for $199 since I have eligible upgrades. I planned on selling the cracked one on ebay for $600-700 but Apple said "we'll replace the back for free or if it's to bad we'll just give you a new phone."
The were able to replace the back :( | | | |

I've read that some people are replacing them with metal backs too. I like the look and will do this if I ever drop and break mine: Some are turning iPhone 4's glass back into metal | Crave - CNET

I may have to take it to an Apple store instead of talking to some yahoo on the phone. Maybe I will have better luck. One thing I am realizing is that their "High tech new age glass" that they use that is supposed to be the toughest around isn't.
