Its a "home" unit and if your wife wants to do them for fun, then it would be as good as anything else I guess. Compare it to a Kodak Easy Share. Yes, you can take a photo with it.
If you might be considering a little more "commerical" aspect, call the Kalman Company in Dallas and see that they have. IF they dont have waht you might want, let me know, I have a cpl of other sources we used.

I've just purchased an embroidery machine for my wife... we looked at the Viking and it is on the higher end of the home units, but it is a non-commercial unit.

We ended up going with a unit from Janome for a bit less money but still a well rated and respected unit/brand. If you have the scratch, a Viking is good way to go. If you want to do lots of stuff or have multiple colored threads at the same time, then you will want one of the higher end professional units.

Viking is a great brand.

If you need to discuss anything about embroidery, send me an email:

Here is a pic of my setup.

Yikes....! I was going to post a pic of my wife's 6 needle BabyLock, and the rest of her set-up, but I'd be embarrassed.

Now...only of the embroidery software manufacturers would port their software to the Mac....

That ain't no home unit, John. It may be in your home... but I bet it cost as much as your car.

I can say from personal experience that John underpromises and way over delivers.

It was a pleasure to do business with him in the past and he has absolutely earned my future business.

That is a monster!

Before you buy find out who really made the machine. there are some machines that are made by one company and re-branded. I think white and viking are related.

I have heard great things about the Janome and Viking. I would also look at brother. Janome tends to be more commercial strength for at home use though. At least with their just sewing machines.
