This is in Ill. A man is facing 15 years in prison for video taping his own arrest. I know we've discussed similar laws here before, but I don't recall any this severe. Many we discussed were tied to the audio, but this is pure video and Ill. is not alone in having such a law.

I love the laws in IL... was born there, 90% of my family lives there. They have some good stuff....

Illegal to record an interaction with the government just sounds like you expect corruption.

Interesting. It says:
"Under the Eavesdropping Act, which applies in 12 states, all parties must consent to a recording being made"

Now I know it's been like the with audio(phone call and what not) for long time but video shot from the street?
Does that apply to surveillance cameras?
Or heck, candid street photography?
I'm assuming "intent" comes into play somewhere.

Some of you may know that I record video everywhere I go, including the classes that I take in college. My Cisco professor told me on Monday that he would allow me to shoot video that night, but after Monday, I would be limited to audio-only. He did not tell me the reason, but he has said that he does not want to know about students duplicating any Cisco material. We aren't even allowed to print out our homework, which has to be done online. So, I suppose that he does not want me to copy the images of the slides from Cisco that he flashes up on the screens in front of the classroom.

He also informed me that it is illegal to photograph students walking up or down the stairwell. He said that one of his classes had tested the range of a networked webcam by walking down the hall and to the stairs. A female student got to the head of the stairs, saw the camera, turned around and complained to the department head. The outcome of all that is that it is illegal to photograph students going up and down stairs. Ironically, the day after he told me this (yesterday), I witnessed a woman at the school installing security cameras. She was up on a ladder, putting one in by the ceiling, so that it overlooks the stairs. I shot a photo of her doing it.

The government has this attitude that only it is allowed to shoot videos without our consent. They put their cameras up everywhere.

There is an issue at a lot of universities right now. The smartphones are able to stream live video, and that technology is progressing every day. If you buy a ticket, then stream the game to friends, they won't watch it on TV. The universities give exclusive rights to certain broadcast networks to air their games. The question arises as to what point you are violating the agreement between the university and the broadcast network. There is also the matter of what to do with violators. I know the issue of absolutely no phones allowed in a game has been discussed.

There will always be a gray area in the law about recording anything.

Now let's think this out.
How about Rod Blagojevich of Ill who was taped making deals then indicted for racketeering, extortion and fraud. Will this be thrown out because he did not give permission to be recorded?

Uhhh...no.

The man they convicted, didn't record the arrest. His friend did.
