You could try just a cheap plastic poncho or one of the military ponchos. They are open on the sides and will allow air to circulate better than a jacket but they aren't as weather proof either. A poncho won't have sleeves so your arms will get wet but if it's warm that won't matter. If the weather is cool I wouldn't consider anything but a jacket and pants. You can get by with just the old yellow slicker suit that will keep you dry but hot or spend the money and get GoreTex.

Stop by a Bass Pro or Cabelas store if you have one near. They don't have all the options on the rack but what they DO have will give you a good idea of the options available as well as fit, comfort, and wearability.

I have Gore-Tex Jackets and rain pants type gear (all bought at different mfg's outlet stores so much cheaper overall) but there are cheaper options out there that work fine for only occasional use.

Whenever it looks like it's going to rain, I bring along my old FootJoy golf rain suit. Not the cheapest thing around, but it does a great job of keeping me dry and it vented. Don't get me wrong, vented doesn't mean cool. There are also plenty of pockets for an added bonus.
