Negatives to Digital - 02-03-2011, 10:33 PM

I am trying to find someone that can take my film and turn them into digital files. Does anyone know who can do this at a reasonable rate and do a great job?

There is a couple of threads about this.

The general consensus is to buy a scanner and do it yourself.

I think a decent one can be had for ~$150.00.

I was at office depot yesterday and they had a 35mm negative scanner - saves to an SD card - for $99.

that's it - it's only $55 at amazon.

Those little scanners arent that great, only scanning in at 5MP. A used flatbed is your best bet for quality. I use a canoscan 8000f and im getting almost 8MP with 35mm. 6x6 is even higher.

what one will do with the scanned images dictates what route to go. if one simply wants a digital copy for sharing online or one of those fancy digital frames, donna's suggestion will suffice. options go up from there all the way up to drum scanning. printing any significant size may be an issue with what dona suggested?

as kevin said, do a search.

Thanks for all of you suggestions. Working a full time job & family, I rarely have time to do extra 'me' projects!! I am going to look more into ScanCafe. I have lots of family negatives I want to turn into digital files.

It is certainly a time-consuming project. Two strips of 35mm at decent resolution on my Canonscan 8800F can take more than an hour to scan. The quality is great, but it definitely takes up a lot of time. I believe AZ Photo, in Houston, will digitize negatives. They will certainly to a good job, but I doubt their price would be what most consider affordable.
