[Old Geezer Rant]

This a generic rant. No individuals, real or imagined, are being alluded to.

If I read one more gushing rave review comparing iPhone photos processed with Hipstamatic to "capturing that old time film effect", I'm going ballistic! Folks, I've thrown away better looking negatives and positives and prints than what I see from Hipstamatic. I own 100+ year old photos that look as good as the day they were made. Which is to say a lot better than most small cameras and lenses made today can produce. I have been up close and personal to many more vintage photos that look better than the ones I have. Good photos made from film did not look bad.
What you may be remembering, or seeing at home, or attempting to emulate are photos made with the first color processes that proved to be less than archival. The look probably has more to do with improper storage than any fault of the process.
So. Play with your iPhones and Hipstamatic all you want. Surprise and amaze us with your creations. Please, please, please don't mention the look of film and the Hipstamatic look together. OK?
Thanks!

And, for good measure, you kids get off my porch too! LOL. Sorry Wayne, just messing with ya. Just treat it like background noise and ignore. Works wonders.

I guess what they really mean is that you can take a picture that looks like it was printed on paper that was not acid free or stabilized, was stored in a cheap glass frame with sunlight streaming in on it for 50+ years, printed in a process that didn't have good color longevity, and had the hell scratched out of it after the cat knocked the frame off the mantle.

It's easier to say "that old time film effect..."

Thanks for the post, Wayne. I had never heard of Hipstamatic before, but I googled it and found out it's available for android. I'm gonna get it!

But, I know that "old" doesn't necessarily mean low quality. My parents' B&W wedding photos could have been taken yesterday. They look great! Mine, on the other hand....

Wayne, you really need to let it go. We all can't live in the past. Take a deep breath, exhale and let our members have some fun. Remember...that's what photography is all about.

At 76 years do I qualify as a geezer or a young whippersnapper?

Back in the day old negatives emptied my wallet at a time I could ill afford them.

It's especially annoying when I'm waiting for another scan of some old faded photos so I can fix them. Whoever failed to save the negs of so many family photos should have been slapped.

If I want to capture that old time film effect, I use the box camera or the 120 converted Polaroid. If I want circular vignetting, I can use a crop-sensor lens on a film camera. If I want rough edges, I can tear a new mask out of black paper for the Polaroid. If I really want these things on digital shots, I can do it on the computer later. The last thing I want to do is add some irreversible effect to the original file on a tiny screen.

For your viewing pleasure.........The work of Kyle Cassidy.

This could start a trend.

Kyle provided the inspiration for "This time Milo had gone too far." BlackBerry orignal. Lightroom edit.

I do hope that readers take my Rant in the spirit that it was intended. We all need an occassional wind up to keep things interesting. A diversion from the ordinary.

Sonny, I am having fun. In an all digital way.

Thanks Jim.
