Internet TV? Deal or Dud? - 02-15-2011, 12:14 PM

Anyone getting TV through the internet rather than say Verizon, Direct TV, etc?

I keep hearing about site like Hulu mentioned on the radio and such, and I was wondering if there was really any viability to this?

Anyone going this route today and if so, what say you? Deal or Dud?

Thanks,

W

We've got Apple TV, and use Netflix - pretty cool. We still have DirectTV for everything else.

We don't subscribe to cable. We have an HD antenna I installed in the attic and ran to our living room. We stream Netflix and Hulu. We watch about 2 hours of TV a week on average. I probably watch 3 movies or documentaries a week in addition to the ~2 hours a week of TV we watch.

We haven't had cable for years. It works well for us because we don't watch much TV. And when we dont care if its a day or two beyond the original air date. We hulu for free and have Netflix. We are a family of four. With a 10 and 4 year old. No issues

If you watch sports your kinda screwed without cable

Lots of sports come on network TV. I miss MNF on ESPN, SportsCenter and Thursday night basketball on TNT. But I get a ton more work done and have an excuse to get friends to go to the pub to watch a game with me.

World Cup on iUnivision!

HD antenna and stream Netflix here too. I'm hoping Sony will come up with a cool TV package for the PS3, but I'm not holding my breath. Break from the cable companies!

Thanks guys, sounds like it is working pretty good for you. I will have to check into it further.

@ Melissa, which stations are you able to pick up with the HD receiver?

Thanks,

W

We just cut the cable at the first of the year - Netflix and Hulu and playon which aggregates a lot of content (web available but it is nice to have in one place )

I do miss not having access to a lot of sports ... but oh well

so far so good

Hmmm, yea the sports thing is a biggie as I have to see the Auburn game on Saturdays during football season.

Yeah, that's right I said it.... Auburn, you know, the National Champions! War Eagle...

LOL, I just had to get that outta the way... I just love my Tigers, so we would have to work a plan around that.

4.1 - Fox
5.1-5.3 - NBC
11.1 - CBS (sporadic at times)
13.1-13.2 - KERA/PBS
27.1 - My 27 (sporadic)
33.1 - The CW (sporadic)
68.1 - ION (sporadic at times)

I live in a downstairs apartment though with tall trees around. If you can mount a nice antenna to your roof or in your attic it will most likely work better than mine. My internet is through Charter Cable (no other high speed options for me) and Netflix works great through my PS3. I don't need to watch all that TV anyways.

EDIT: Also, the HD looks way better through my antenna than it ever did through Charter.

I use Netflix and Hulu a lot but still have cable. The price keeps going up though. I watch a lot of History and Discovery Channel and I would miss them.

That was mainly what I watched. A lot of their shows are on Netflix. I don't miss HIST and DISC nearly as much as I thought I would.
