Old Computers... sooooo slow, huh? - 02-17-2011, 03:52 PM

I have an old computer that hasn't been used since about 2005. Yesteerday I connected it to a monitor, etc, to see what I had left on it. I found a lot of images that I am sure I have archived, but to make double sure, I decided to make a CD back up again of most every thing.

After realizing that is only had a CD burner, and no DVD, I decided to plug an external hard drive in and copy the files. Darn... took almost an hour to copy 4 gigs, so I decided to just go back to a CD.

After fooling around all morning I got to wondering how did we get anything done back 5 to 6 years ago? It takes forever to copy files.

Next thing to do, after making sure everything is archived.... will be to take the computer outside and...

Yes... I have enough doorstops.

Unfortunately the life of computers is about 5 years, and that is stretching it.
I have 4... two in service and one that I am "retiring" One is only used to show previews to customers.

Spoiled kids. I made a bunch of money working from home back in the late 80s-early 90s. I had an AT clone built in Austin, TX., 40 MegaByte hard drive, and a 2400 baud modem for file transfer to/from my client in downtown New Orleans. The work got done because I learned to multi-task. Need to get files? No worrries. Start the run. Eat dinner. Need to send files after working on them? No problem. Start the run. Go to bed.
By the way, I'm using a hot rod in it's day ancient Dell for all of my photo needs. It has Firewire ports which are WAY faster than the original USB. I do need an external Firewire drive. The internal drive is SCSI and I don't feel like spending big bucks to replace/add on internally.

Turn it into a fileserver, some SATA Controller cards, some disk, a card reader, a cf card, a Gigabyte NIC, and FreeNAS.
