I took one once a long time ago when I was getting back into photography as a hobby (before fate took control and turned it into a business)...

Like anything, you will get out of it what you put in. I was more seeking like minded individuals for networking than I was education and I made a couple friends. I knew more about the history of photography than the instructor, who seemed mostly interested in showing his work to a captive audience... but I still got something out of the class with an opportunity to get back into photography and share what I saw with others.

Short version.. you'll probably get the same amount out of it as you would one of the traveling speakers with the PPA.. a local guild.. or any one of a number of meetup.com groups.

I can highly recommend the photography classes at Northlake College. The spring semester already started, but they offer summer classes in Photography 101. So if you are still looking to take some classes come May/June - sign up! One of the best and most affordable education in town.

I have also taken a class at UTA, a couple of years ago. I came away with some new knowledge, but the class did not inspire me. I think they have updated the program since then.

+1 on Brad's comment.. in some ways the classes may go deeper on some topics than others.. and depending on your needs/wants may be a great choice.. but in addition I'd suggest looking into camera clubs too.. seeing the presentations/workshops provided by them, going on photo trips with members, and seeing/competing in monthly competitions, not to mention the contacts made has been a great experience..

Yea, I almost forgot about clubs... back before I discovered the forum and the pro groups, I was a member of this club:

Trinity Arts Photo Club

They are catered toward the beginning amateur while still being open to the more advanced pros... and they are a nice bunch of people. I used to take my teenage son along to meetings regularly as well... everyone was welcome.

Hadn't heard of that one.. I do recognize the name of a number of their judges though..

There is also

Fort Worth Camera Club

and

Dallas Camera Club

too.. I'm sure there are probably more.. just the ones I'm aware of.

Enjoy,
David
