Stop telling people "Great Job!"... - 04-10-2011, 03:33 PM

...when they really didn't do a great job.

Believe me, I'm all for constructive criticism and accentuating the positive, but telling a person they did well when they really didn't is counterproductive. This applies to critique given in this forum.

Should be a 12 point critic that covers everything photographic about the shot. That way your lighting may be correct, but the composition is lacking. Focus tack-sharp, yet the subject is un-interesting.

Yeah, but the same applies for being over critical. Sometimes people have to find and point out nit picks no human being would ever care about.

great job is relative though...I may do a great job, but it is compared to what I normally do, NOT what srwatters us capable...same when I give critiques which is rarely...I giving critiques based on their level of ability, not someone elses.

There are there are people that are what they say are beginners and doing better than those in the business. I say if those that are beginners are doing better than those collecting money, I say great job...it's relative...

I hope no one is telling me in 5 years I need to remember to do the basics...

One thing I like is hyper critical. These are the Things that i may never Catch in my own work. It's what you need sometimes if you plateau IMHO.

Often I have no opinion (often it's hard to do on my phone) and if " great job" is all that comes to mind I just move on.

It's also an issue when you go beyond 3 images for cc. Be reasonable.

Now if assessment of photography wasn't subjective, I'm sure you'd be rampantly correct..

Correct. Good critique contains both praise and suggestions for improvement. Unless the photo stinks to high heaven, there's got to be SOMETHING good about it. But just blanketing poor photos with "great!" lowers the standards for aspiring photogs.

Of course, you are free to agree or disagree.

It goes back to what has been said before... Give some idea of what your were going for in the shot & ask for a particular critic. Too often it's "How'd I do?" Pretty open question that leaves the reviewer with no choice but to stare at the photo looking for any perceived errors.

Maybe something like this...

"CC: Shot this Cardinal early in the morning. Tried to get the bright reds in the morning fog look with the shot."

Then people know what you were going for and can add thoughts of how well you succeeded. Comments can be given to help understand ways to get the particular "look" the next time.

Dude, I've been saying this since day one. Haven't made a dent. Too many people on here of the "I want your opinion but only good things!" way of thinking. Which is why I don't post that often. I don't hesitate to tell people what I really think about their photos, and then people flame me.

To me it seems like too many TPFers confuse "Critique" with "pat me on the back".

Quoted for undeniable truth. If I ask for criticism, I probably already know what's right with the shot, I need to hear what's wrong with it. It's the little details that make a shot really good instead of really average, and I might need the help in recognizing where I was off.

Same thing with the novel I'm working on. I've sent out chapters to beta readers and gotten back "wow, it's good." That really doesn't help me a bit. I need the "It's good, but..."

Thank you, that is all.
