Question: Is it appropriate? - 04-12-2011, 02:13 PM

There's a workshop that I really want to go to but the cost is WAY beyond our means. Is it appropriate to ask for sponsors to help buffer the cost or should I just save my "allowance" until next year?

I never have understood workshops. Cartier Bresson didnt ever attend one to my knowledge.

Zach, they can still be quite useful. Not everyone has his talent.

Stephanie, which workshop are you looking into? Many times there are affordable ones or even stuff that may be able to get you started.

I myself, doing this as a hobby first, secondary income second... I don't pitch any purchase idea unless I known it's in budget. Then, it's discussed based on importance etc.

I think if it's that far beyond your means, and you aren't full tilt boogie into this... Just pass and attack it later. Heck maybe you won't even need it by then. At the same time, I think you could find just as great things in your price range, but i suppose thats just an assumption.

On the other hand, I'm a fan of quick easy money grabs to make some quick easy cash, like mini sessions and raffles.

I don't know who you would intend on asking for help from, but me personally I wouldn't ask any potential clients, of any scope. I fall under a fake it till you make it
Motto and I wouldn't want to show my cards.

What about family members giving you a "business loan"?

Some of us pay for our photography education with our day jobs, some of us pay for it by charging clients, others have parents or debt.

I've never heard of a sponsor, paying for a student's photography workshop. Any sponsor would have to get something in return. I'm thinking local workshops will be the better option for you.

yea... i wouldnt ask for sponsors to get you to go... that might be a bit akward... which workshop are you looking at.

I've been to several and some i have not liked and thought were a waste while others were worth every penny...

also, dont discount the vast knowledge available to you via the internet... there are a ton of forums, videos, sites etc that offer up a ton of info FOR FREE.

Those have the best bang for your buck.

.....edit.. Removed my post since I misunderstood the question, and the link I posted has no benefit to the OP.

It covers what I'm interested in photography in - equine composition. The entire workshop is geared towards my family's interests as a whole. My husband rides bulls and trains reining horses, my kids are in to riding sheep, steer, and horses, and my husband likes to play dress up so I can shoot him in his gear.

I really crave the fine tuning and guidance that I think I can get from this workshop. I've seen a lot of Flash and Adrienne's work and they do a great job. This is a local workshop out here at the State Natural Area in Bandera. I don't know if they're going to offer it next year or not. I e-mailed that question to them a couple of minutes ago so if they will hold it again at a later date I'll make myself be patient and wait, but if not I'm going to be wound up tighter than a rusty pistol until I can figger out how to get my cameras there!

**link removed by Abel since this workshop was listed and removed earlier today because it did not follow our listing requirements...**

'Tis the link.

I just read the site. To me it seems like fun, but I'm not sure if it doesn't seem like a little fluff that gets the price up.

I do still think, if I were you, I'd try and make it happen. Good luck.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant by "sponsor". Since you meant your own family members and friends, in my opinion, you are the person who must determine if it is appropriate or not.

The event I mentioned will have nothing in the way of equine photography. It is geared for portrait photography mostly.
