Thumbs up Shoot directly to your iPad and other mobile devices - 04-13-2011, 07:03 PM

Shooting tethered to the iPad is something I've been interested in for quite a while but I wanted a wireless way to accomplish this task.

1. I first saw this video about two months ago and was very excited with the idea. Still, the cost of purchasing the Eye-Fi card, a mobile hotspot, and possibly the 3G service required from purchasing the mobile hotspot was holding my back from moving forward.

Then Terry White put out a video in March.

2. Last week I saw this article eliminating the need for a Mi-Fi hotspot by Jailbreaking the iPad and installing some software. Even better and cheaper!
http://fstoppers.com/ipad

3. Yesterday it got even more gooder, as my kids would say. All you need now is the new Eye-Fi Mobile X2 that offers Direct to iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and Android mobile device shooting WITHOUT the need for a WiFi hotspot, which is less expensive than the Eye-Fi Pro X2 card. No hotspot, no jailbreaking, and no extra software. Yeah...it's all good. Check out the article below.

sonny, my understanding that the new EyeFi still requires a WiFi connection of some sort. it just doesn't have to go somewhere else 1st.

It seems like to me you do not need a wi-fi connection other that the card talking directly to the iPad.

I think I mis-understood your 1st post.

Yes, both devices still requires a wi-fi connection but now you can cut out the mobile hotspot devices.

to turn it into a CF just use a SD-CF adapter. Allows you to use SD in your dSLR. $20 at Fry's.

I had heard of those. However there is reduced network range when using an adapter. Not to mention some of the other possible problems. There have been discusions on other forums about removing the metal casing of the adapter to help solve that problem. I do have an eye-fi for a point and shoot. Think I will hve to do some testing. Looks like a Frys run for lunch. :)

Gooderer-est is being able to WiFi upload from many McDonalds. Yes there is a app for finding the closest McDs.
The Gps only tags when wirelessly uploading. Also, Plano west and The Arts/Central business Dallas tag fairly well. I believe the system defaults to the last Gps waypoint logged while not within range of a participating WiFi network. I find the execution a tad slow meaning you must be able to delay or stop auto sleep on your camera to a time span sufficient to upload.

Sonny Check out Capture one. I use it when I shoot products and marketing material. The head boss gets the Ipad and can see what I shoot right after I click the shutter. The other guys can also see it on their I-phones. Its pretty neat that I can shoot tethered and then have everybody see it on different devices!

Is Capture One the RAW editor program?

Ken, I think Eye-Fi warned against that. They said damage to the card, or camera, or both, not sure which, was possible.

not sure how it would damage the camera, but the card part not working would seem plausible as it does have to communicate somehow and the metal cover might interfere. "Damage" sounds a bit weasle-y here. I've used the adapter for several years in my 50d and 10d before that without issue, but without the EyeFi device either.

Yes but it ain't cheap. Although you can download a fully functional 30 day trial. Probably the best capture/editor software for professional commercial studio shoots.
