When buying a used iPhone from an individual is there a way to insure that it is not stolen before purchase?

Get the MSID then call tech support to find out the status of the device. They can verify whether it has been reported as stolen or whether it is attached to an account that has an outstanding balance ( the balance would have to be cleared before it could be activated on another account).

Thanks

I've googled but as yet have not been able to determine where to find this number. Any ideas?

I have 3 chances to buy but want to make sure at least one is clean.

I would guess that is the serial number. Go to settings-general-about- and the serial number will be listed.
