Lightbulb Advice for visiting Yosemite between June - Aug - 04-27-2011, 09:52 AM

Hey all,

So a good friend of mine got a research position in Fresno this summer over the dates of June 13 - Aug 13 and has invited me out to visit the labs and also take a trip to Yosemite. I was wondering during this time frame when the best actual dates would be to visit. It would probably be a over the weekend trip leaving on a thursday and getting back on a monday.

For those of you who have been there during the summer and help or guidance would be great. Also, as anywhere i go, I will have my camera and was wondering where some of the best places would be to see (must see places) as it'll be such a short trip.

Thanks for the feedback and help.

Important safety tip - don't feed the bears.

Avoid the July 4th weekend. You'll probably need to stay somewhere outside of the valley (Bass Lake is close by) as the availability of camping/hotel spots is limited inside Yosimite.

As to must see...urm...the whole place? Most of the "must see" places are easily accessed either by driving to, or parking and walking. The Merced river runs through the valley, and there are lots of good spots to shot along the way.

hmmm... ya I am not crazy enough to try anywhere on July 4th haha. As for lodging my friends place is like an hour or 2 from the park so I will be staying with her. I am not sure what her schedule is gonna be like until she gets to her lab in June so we'll see about that.

I would love to see the whole place but is that really do able in a 2-3 day visit?

I would spend at least one day up in the high-country, around Tioga Pass. June might be a little too early, but we were there in July and it was beautiful (also much less crowded than the valley).

One of the best alpine hikes I've ever done was in Twenty Lakes Basin (which is actually just outside the national park).

Angelo: I looked at your pictures on your flikr and have to say beautiful shots and that is deff the environment I am looking for.

Jeff: I will surly keep Tioga Pass in mind.

The date will probably be some where around mid to late July.

Study up on Ansel Adams, if I were going there I would try to find some of the shots he took over the years and do my own versions. I am a big B and W fans so YMMV.

I was there last June. To me, that's the BEST time to go. Less people, weather is the best it will be until September. Was there for 3 days, hiked Half Dome for one of those days. There is a great variety of hiking options available (long/short easy/hard) which you can easily factor into what you want to see/do
