OK, I know this has been discussed on this forum, but I can't find it anywhere. Here's what I am looking for: there are a lot of open fields/coastal grass and what not in the area I live. What is the best way to find out who owns the property so I can ask permission to shoot on their property? Do I check with the County Clerk??? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!! ok, part two:
After finding the owner, do you think it's better to send them a letter asking for their permission with a self addressed stamped envelope or would you just go ask them?? I'm torn.... I like the idea of a letter because if/when they respond, you will have it on a piece of paper that you can show to a neighbor/authorities if they show up, but it's a little impersonal. I would rather go talk to them, but would that seem a bit pushy to you?? What are your thoughts?

Most of the old men in my town gather at the cafe in the afternoons.
If you can find that spot you can find the owners...
If you have a road name and number and a description of the property then one of those older gentlemen should be able to tell you who owns it (or they may be able to tell you where you can find similar locations that they own, etc.)
Beyond that -- The Central Appraisal district usually has the Tax values listed online for properties
---------------------------
Nevermind -- I'll take care of it myself!

One catch, the tax appraiser does not necessairly know who the current owner is. For example, I have a house up in Athens, my sister lives in it. It was my mother's before she passed. Since the will was probated the property legally passed into my and my sister's name. The tax office does not get probate records so as far as they are concerned my mother still owns the property.
On the flip side, a title company will have all the records and so will know exactly who is the contact.

I would ask them personally. In a small town a face and a handshake mean more than a letter than may sit unopened.
My 2 cents
