Win7 stuck in perpetual update mode - 04-28-2011, 12:52 PM

Here's the deal. System downloaded and installed updates. Shut down. Power up. It makes zero progress with configuring said updates. Just sits there for five minutes with nothing happening. Eventually Windows loads, but it goes through the same process with each shutdown/power-up cycle. Thoughts?

Mine do about the same. Each time I start my laptop, it has new downloads, then installs, then restarts. Runs fine until I go to power off. Then wants to do something again. On restart, all over again. My desktop isn't quite as bad, but almost.

...........

I shut down my laptop right after posting above. It said don't turn off, as it was configuring updates. When it finished, it turned itself off. I just restarted, yep, 'Configuring Windows updates, 0% completed, Do not turn your computer off.

Ok, it finished, ready for me to sign in.

Welcome to WIN7, I presume.

...............

And, once again, it installed 5 new updates, as I turned it off. Of cousre, it will configure them when I restart.

All 3 of my computers do it.

Use Disk Cleanup under Start>programs>accessories>system tools

Check box to clean system files and clean them up.

Did that and re-ran updater. Whatever the problem was cleared after Windows reverted to a previous state. We're good now. Thanks.

Spoke too soon. It keeps trying to update, fails, and then reverts. Must be something wrong with one of the updates that MS released.

then try the updates

It says that I have to be an administrator (which I am) running a console session to do that.

You still have to right-click cmd and "run as administrator" which is a separate hidden account.

That's right. I forgot. OK. Here's the message I got after running the command:

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Still need to locate and open the log.

I ran the scan and then now it still gets stuck in the eternal update and won't even revert back at this point. So am I just screwed at this point?

Well, it finally reverted back again after about 15 minutes of getting nowhere. Wonder what virus, ehem, I mean update Microsoft pushed out that's messing the systems up now. Tomorrow could be a long day at work me thinks.

Slave the drive on another machine and hack the restore points.
