Smile Yosemite workshop recommendations - 05-23-2011, 12:48 PM

I am thinking of making a trip this Summer to visit Yosemite for the first time. I am also contemplating attending a workshop instead of fumbling around. I looked at Gary Hart's site and like his work a lot. I would appreciate any suggestions from experienced landscape fellows regarding the best time of the year for photos instead of Summer.

I have been to Yosemite a few times myself. Winter is my favorite time to go. For us Texans snow is fun to photograph since its very rare for us :) Fall is a good time as well, you can get snow shots and fall colors (depending on the time of the year)...only issue with fall is the lack of good waterfalls. Truthfully there is no bad time...it all comes down to what you want to see.

Also look up Michael Frye for a workshop. He does group and 1 on 1 workshops.

here are the shots I got in Feb this year:

Investigate the workshop schedule at the Ansel Adams Gallery web page.

2011 Photography Workshops

You could learn how to use your M9 to make big digital negatives that you then make big platinum prints from. Grinning. You could learn some digital stuff too.

Best time? When the place isn't filled with Griswolds. During the week. Away from holidays. When the kids are in school. Get away from the main attractions and the campgounds in the valley.
On the other hand, any day in Yosemite is a good day.

Ansel Adams workshops would be great except for the weekday commitment. I may have to get a private one or two-day workshop because of time limitation. I cannot afford to be off any more weekdays except for fridays this year since I already took off a week in March for my trip to Europe. Thank you very much for your inputs. It looks like I may have to go there 3 or 4 different times to photograph during the different seasons. The first one will be a learning experience since I am only a beginner in landscape.

Nothing wrong with several 4 day trips over long holiday weekends. The Griswolds won't bite.

Gosh, I wish I would have written it down. At Texas School, Tony Corbell was going "somewhere in the mountains" for a kind of workshop...and I believe it was during the week. for maybe a 3 or 4 day thing. I will see if I can find out about it.

Lloyd Chambers is a pretty sharp guy who seems to know the area well. He occasionally offers scheduled small-group workshops, but I believe he also can be booked for private tours. Drop him an email.

I would think for the valley, anytime but summer would be good. It's too crowded in summer, and hotter as well. In spring you have the roaring waterfalls, in autumn you'll get fall colors if your timing is right, and of course there's the chance of snow in winter if you're lucky.

For summer (specifically July-Sept), my recommendation would be the high country, including portions of the Easter Sierra. This will get you away from the worst crowds, and there is some absolutely amazing alpine scenery to be found. Higher elevations also mean cooler temps in summer. While the valley is a sight to behold and should be visited at least once, it's the high country that really made an impression on me, and that's where I'll be returning on future trips.

Again, thank you everyone for such useful information. I will have to consider postponing my trip to October to take advantage of the fall foliage and avoid the crowds. Now I have to look into some ultra wide lenses. The voigtlander 12 or 15 are prime candidates for the M9.
