Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD - 02-11-2008, 04:54 PM

Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD

Ugh... I wanted to get a combo player because there were a lot of movies on HD-DVD that are not on Blu Ray and vice versa.

I saw Netflix announced their carrying Blu Ray exclusively. then I saw today that Best Buy is going to officially start to push Blu Ray to their customers etc etc.

We will see if there is ever a one format winner like in the VHS vs Betamax war in the 80's

blu ray has pulled most of the big names production companies too, but the few big ones they have left are under long contracts with hddvd.

Well, I'm all for blu ray, it's just a better format, even though I do have the hd-dvd player for my xbox 360. But then again, Microsoft is one of the only remaining big supporters of the HD-DVD format left. We'll see how things turn out, I'm waiting to buy a specific blu ray or hd standalone player myself until this rivalry is settled.

Blu Ray has won, so Sony will make a lot of royalties off of it. AS fasr as it being better than HD-DVD... I'm not sure one is better than the other except for Copy-right control. We will see how it goes thou...

From the info that I have gathered, they are both optically about the same.
However, the Blu-ray has a larger storage capacity.

Also, from the CES show in Vegas last month, it was announced pretty much that everyone was going with Blu-ray.

It looks like Sony finally won this one. They are probably still mad about losing the Betamax fight. Just for the record, Betamax had the better video quality. The tape was wrapped around the spinning recording head farther, thus giving it a better chance to pick up the image. Why did VHS win? Who knows. Maybe they had a better marketing plan.

Hey Scott, the reason I think Blu Ray is the better format is based on Blu Ray being a higher capacity disc than HD-DVD. I forget the exact stats at the moment, but I do remember it was about 20 gigs on both the single and double layer formats.
