Back from "camping" at Lake Siskiyou. - 05-27-2008, 02:39 PM

Well I went to Lake Siskiyou for Memorial Day Weekend. It was nice to be able to breathe without any asthma problems. It rained most of the time, and when it did not rain, it was slightly foggy. It was very dark and overcast with dark clouds; I did not see the sun at all the whole time I was there.

I did take my camera and lenses and took a few images. My 70-200 F2.8L IS was giving me issues with the 1D Mark II. They did not want to play nice with each other. Every other shot was error 99 for the first day.

There were a few nice waterfalls that I wanted to capture, so I figured I would get some slow water flow shots. Failed…I could not get the camera to shoot slow enough to get the effect I wanted without getting camera shake. I used my tripod and attempted to do MLU-- failed; the camera did not want to do it. I pulled out the good ole trusty manual and followed directions, the mirror lockup function just flat out did not happen. After about 45 minutes at a waterfall, I then decided to try it using my laptop to control the camera… failed again. I could not get the camera and the computer to communicate with each other thru Fire-wire. I was able to connect via USB, but you can’t take images with that. I had to walk away from lots of opportunities that in my opinion would have generated some very nice images.

I didn’t bring any of the other camera’s with me, and if I could kick my own rear end, I would. I will be making a special trip during the summer to take images up there.

I did get a few images…

The images below was shot around ISO 1600, it was VERY Dark and Cloudy, I was not even sure I'd get anything in focus.

Thats weird that your camera wouldn't MLU. If memory serves me right, on the 1d Mark II, that would be CFn 12. Just set it to enable and you are good to go.

If I forgot my shutter release cable, I usually just set my camera to timer with MLU and that usually gets rid of camera shake. Most of the time I don't even use MLU and I am still fine.

Also, you may or may not know this. But make sure when using an IS lens with a tripod, that IS is turned off. The IS tries to stabilize an already stabilized lens which causes blur.

As far as the shots you did get, they turned out really nice. I especially liked the bird in flight shots.

Hey at least you're being positive about it! I'd be kicking myself for weeks.
