How do you ogranize your photos? - 06-05-2008, 12:30 PM

I have just about every photo I have have taken, that I wanted to keep.

If you wanted to see something, I could probably dig it up. Given a few hours

First off, all my photos are on one drive. In it there are folders for each year.
In each year folder, there are folders for each month.
In those monthly folders, there may be only photos, or there may be more folders, depending on the event, etc.

It will probably take me a few days to reorganize everything, but I am ready to take on that challenge.

How do you organize your photos, and why do you think it's the best way?
I am looking for input here, to help me get my S#$% straghtened out.

Thanks

Edit: Of course, this also means making new archival DVD's with the new org.

I do something similar to you...
Photo/year/month/week/event or whatever I want to name the photos

When I download the images I use the photo downloader packaged with CS3 and use it to rename the files to something like

Wedding example
amandajay_reif_20080415_000
So
wifehusband_lastname_date_sequence

So then I can just search for the date or the peoples name and it will pop up.

Done this for 5 years and it works for me. Well... for like a year I tried to use Aperture to keep track of the photos, but I didn't like it as much as this.

I use the same structure for any drives I work on whether it be my scratch disk or backups.
(YYYY > YYYY-MM-DD_description)

Primary drive when proofing and post production...

And here are the backups.....
