Fireworks! - 07-03-2008, 08:11 AM

Tomorrow is the 4th of July. :w00t:

Is anyone going out to try and take photos of the fireworks?
I know that with the wildfires (I heard over 1000 now) in California, a few cities are choosing NOT to shoot off the fireworks, but there have got to be some near you.

Let's see what you can get. ;)

C'mon Rich, let's see some of them (last years, not the pretty colored clouds). Give us something to aspire to. :D

And don't use that lame excuse that you are at work right now!
(he is, and so am I).

I'm planning on taking my camera and tripod tomorrow night. We're going friends that have a condo on Redondo Beach.

Staying home to keep my dogs calm. Fairfield doesn't shoot off any fireworks as it is but there are plenty of idiots who are shooting off things until the wee hours.

more on topic... - 07-03-2008, 08:37 PM

My horse didnt go over well LOL
I'm still learning my D80. These are from last years KFOG Kaboom in the city. I just held the shutter and let it snap away, nothing special here. Luckily I got 2 that came out pretty nice.

Those are nice Rich. :)

I only hope I can do as well tomorrow night. My past attempts have been less than stellar.

I went to the pyro show (largest in the US) held every year in February in Lake Havasu, AZ. Shot about 100 pictures with various shutter speeds n what not. Seemed like nothing "worked" just got lucky every now n then.

There are a couple of tutorials here and here

They have different ideas on which lens to choose, but they both tell you to use a slow shutter speed and a lower ISO. You need to have the shutter open longer so that you capture the light trails.:w00t:

Okay folks, I threw out the thread, so here are some photos I shot this evening.
Shooting fireworks is definately something I need to work on, as I am not proud of these photos. :(
Unfortunately, it's something we usually only get to try once a year.

All were shot on a tripod with a cable/remote release. They were also all shot with the IS off, and manual focus. 1 second exposure with f/4.0
I should have closed down to around f/11. Live and learn.
Perhaps I'll remember for next year?

Let's see 'em folks. Yours HAVE to be better than mine. :w00t:
