OK, for all the Starbucks lovers... Here's a map showing the closings by early next year. http://online.wsj.com/public/resourc...KS_080718.html
The main thing I don't like is the people it will put out of work, but this seems to be the nature of things nowadays.
i have 6 locations within 2 miles of each other out near where we leave and i am surprised not a single one is on the list. heck i think they even have the same street name address. | | | | | Sponsored Links | Premium Members do not see Google advertisements. Getting up on my soapbox now....
I see they are closing one of the 4 near me. Not sad to see it go since it was putting a long time local bakery nearby into trouble.
There are two a block apart in the down town area, this one that is closing about 8 blocks away and one in the grocery market. Its a little bit much to have 4 in such a small area. They gobbled up some nice little mom and pop places that served the community, not the tourist trade and kept those dollars in town.
The local places will hire kids and give them a do-able schedule, work around education and community service, Big brand places schedule the kids up the wazoo, the kids don't know that they are getting used, they only know that they are getting paid more money than they ever have before and for the kids who need to work, that seems like a good deal. But if they put their school top prority or ask for too much time off to study for tests, they will be let go and replaced like one of the millions of paper cups those places use.
It makes me grumpy to see corporations come in and put local people out of business. There is more to getting a cup of joe than slapping down 5 bucks for a half-caf-lowfat-soy latte with whip....a coffee shop should be a place where you can sit and stay awhile, meet your fellow community members...can't even sit a while at most Starbucks, if they have seating...no matter how they try to make it "cozy" it still comes off as commercial and slick.
One of our old coffee shops gave a scholarship every year to an outgoing senior at the local HS...I don't see our local Starbucks doing that.
I'm sure the corporation does some charity work and dollars that contribute to some one some where...but I'm not sure it offsets the damage they do to community and the garbage they produce.
I'll keep making my own at home and on the occasion I NEED to go and get a cup, I'll hit the Pub...in town and locally owned since 1972, where they hire HS kids, give them a good schedule, expect them to put education first and serve their no frills coffee in reusable ceramic mugs!
Now, Crystal...tell them how you REALLY feel.

It's like that here too. There are three Starbucks withing walking distance of each other (three blocks) in downtown Walnut Creek. None of them are closing.
Didn't I hear that Starbucks is offering to place people in other locations? To help keep their employees?
Now, if they do that, doesn't that cut down everyones hours? They will have more employees working less hours, possibly to the point of part time.
Part time employees don't get medical benefits. Sounds like a win/win for Starbucks, eh?

I like any kind of coffee, I drink it all day everyday...there are two or three mom and pop places within walking distance of my house so that's the ones I frequent. If there was a Starbucks close by I would go there too.

I just want to take photos.

Yep, they just opened the third in this little hick-town. I went there once after school (night college) years ago and he paid. I love coffee, but I won't spend $5 or what ever for a cup of coffee. I prefer McDonalds or Burger King for a fast cup of coffee.
EDIT: I just looked on the map and YES, they closing one store.

Well, the great news is that my personal favorite coffee shop here in Fresno, is keeping it's 1 location open, and that's with a Starbucks right down the street within eye shot, and it's one of the ones that is remaining open. I know there's a lot of Starbucks fans out there, but I feel that over the last several years, Starbucks has been seriously lacking in quality and quite a few people that are employed at most of the locations here in Fresno (we're only loosing 2 out of too many - we literally have 2 in the same shopping center and then another across the street.) but the people that I've ran into lack some serious knowledge when it comes to something I thought they would be an expert in - coffee. Sure, they do know how to make the drinks, go through the motions, but don't know what Sumatran beans are, much less can describe where georaphiclly they come from or the taste of the coffee. I may be one of the more decerning coffee drinkers out there, but, just had to chime in on this.

That's insane! | You know, while I have made my dislike for Starbucks clear, if you like them, I'm not telling you to stop, oh, wait, I am now! BOYCOTT STARBUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why? I guess they have been so strapped for cash for so long, even during this growth spurt, they refused multiple requests from thousands of soliders fighting overseas for coffee. Ok, you may not agree with the politics behind it, you may not like the reasons, the politicians, and all of that, but come on now! Support the troops at least. I think even now, Starbucks can afford to send several TONS of coffee to the troops, which I'm sure would lead them to buying Starbucks coffee along with their friends and families when they return.
But either way, if you like them, I know you will go to them, but I can't for the life of me understand why or how they can open multiple locations like the one's in your town and in mine so close to each other.

Please don't turn this into a political thread.
We've already had one thread locked. Let's not make it two.

I perfer Java City and La Bou, but then again, the both started here in Sacramento. Starbucks came in and put a hurting on both. Matter of fact, there is a coffee shop called Antelope Bend in Antelope that shut down, Starbucks killed it.
