Taking a photography class - 03-05-2009, 04:25 PM

A few years ago, I took a "Beginning Photography" class through the local Adult Education courses.

I took that class because I wanted to take the intermediate course.
No, the beginning course wasn't a pre-req, but I figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to brush up on the basics.

So then the next intermediate course was canceled due to lack of participation.

Well, they are offering that course through a different medium now.
I am signed up, and they are requiring a book.
The Basic Book of Photography by Tom Grimm. 5th Edition.

As I was digging through my photography library, guess what I found :w00t:
The Basic Book of Photography by Tom Grimm. 4th Edition.

It's just my luck. I tried my local Borders Books. They had one copy in stock, and it looked like it had been run over by a truck.
They wanted the full price for it. $22.95
I then went over to my local Barnes and Noble. They didn't have it.
I tired the B&N in the next town. Theirs too looked like it had been used as a wheel chock.

Amazon has the book in stock for $14.96. That and another photography guide book for The Grand Canyon and Northeastern Arizona, and shipping was free. :w00t:

Apparently the newer version of the book is updated to cover digital photography.
Something I have a tad bit of an interest in.

I went ahead and bought the newer version. Amazon says it'll be here next week.
Plenty of time before the class starts.

And yes, getting with some like minded people might just get me moving again (in a creative state of mind).

Although, the last class I took, I don't remember if it was the first session or the second one. But I got into a disagreement with the instructor.
He told the class that if you make your aperture smaller, then you have to make your shutter speed faster.
And inversely, if you have a larger aperture, then you have to have a slower shutter speed.

I stopped him and told him that he had it backwards. If he had a large F-stop and a slow shutter speed, he'd be over exposed.
He said "No, you're wrong, I know what I'm talking about!"

He went on talking about something else, and stopped in mid sentence.
He looked at me and pointed at me, and told the whole class
"He's right! I'm wrong, listen to what he said."

Obviously he was thinking about what I said even while he was moving on to the next subject.

I'll report back after the class starts, to see if it's the same guy.
It starts on the last Wednesday of the month.

I have been kicking around the same idea the last couple years. Now that I have some extra time on my hands it may be the perfect time to enroll in a class or two.

Steve,

I know it's not exactly around the corner for you, but the class I'm taking is in Concord.
I can send you a link. You can sign up on-line.

Gotta warn you though. It's 7-9pm on Wednesdays, and it's not exactly close to the freeway.

Okay, for the sake of "What the heck" here's the info on that class.

You can go to Concord Reg and do a search for course number 82590.
It takes place at Centre Concord. If you know the area, this building used to be Rollerworld and is next to Clayton Valley Bowl.

Pasted from the website.
Description:
This course is designed to further your interest in photography. Building on your basic knowledge you will improve your photo shooting skills with night time photography. You will become more confident photographing people and making formal portraits. Your photography expertise will benefit from the 'On Assignment' field trip. Participants provide their own camera and text book is required.

It's the part about photographing people and formal portraits that interests me.
Although I do enjoy night photography. :D

Well, I tried my hand at some portrait work last night.
I must say, that class can't get here fast enough.
