Web page for photography - 05-26-2009, 11:44 AM

I am so inept when it come to understanding how to build a website and I would be very greatful if someone could enlighten not just myself but anyone else that has this handicap as well. My photographs are scattered to the four corners of the Internet and then some. I would really love to have just one localized place to share my experiences with the world.. Not to mention that I would finally have a website of my very own to put in that little box at the bottom of my profile page.:

Please help

TamberBliss

PS Step By Step and free would be right up my mental and financial alley

Tamber,
You can use a site such as Smugmug.
Inside of Smugmug, you can create as many folders as you want, as well as sub folders.
For instance, make a folder for Landscapes.
Inside of that folder, make different folders for "Yosemite" and "North Coast" etc.

Smugmug will give you a discount as a CPF member for your first year.

I love my Smugmug account.

Edit: Okay, Here's the link to the thread with the discount info for Smugmug.

I love smugmug and have my site parked there but for a beginner, it's a bit tough. Better Photo has a nice easy site for $49.00

Depending on the number of photos you are displaying, another free site to consider is Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/

I'm checking out SmugMug that KillJoy suggested at the moment as they have a 14 day trial.. but what i was really interested in is building my own website.

I have had a webshots account for many years but mostly use that for storage.. I'm wondering if it is worth the trouble to move a accumulation of years of photos or should i just stay put.. and Recently I had started separate account for more updated work.. Which I need to read do. The free account give you 2100 uploads in photographs and 210 uploads for Video of course they have to be in the right format..Something i'm still learning

Webshots also dose free and paid hosting and allows one to download the dest top uploader so everything you need is at your finger tips which also sets on line and off line photographs to be use screen savers and such.

The Paid hosting is only $20.00 a year.. I'm sure with all the other photo hosting sites now that i think of it.. you won't find anything cheaper lol. Guess i just decided to stay with Webshots. hahahahaha.. thank you everyone for making me think and reminding me that sometimes what you have is better than what you want. By the way you can also choose who can utilize your photographs.. Ya'll should check it out.. BTW Image size dose not matter Do it Raw and Upload full size if you choose to. I really have to figure out how to use the links to show my photos here.. Guess its time to go push some buttons.. lol

Ya'll have a great one !! Ready, Aim , Fire!!

If you use the "Power" or the "Pro" level Smugmug sites, you can do customization.
It's really cool, and it makes it look like your own site.
They even have their own forum where other users can help you do your customization. :)

If you're not so HTML/CSS inept. I highly recommend a flickr Pro account. Upload as much as you want for $25 a year or $45 for two years. It's easy, you can upload from your phone, desktop or facebook. Smugmug is great too!

I really like smugmug, zenfolio and similar. I don't want to pay 40 or more bucks a year for it since I am just an amateur. Dotphoto.com is free, but not nearly as nice as far as the site they offer you.

If you are looking for a place just to show off your stuff, I would recommend a photo blog and they are free. I really like blogger, but am sick of their themes which haven't changed in years and are very limited. Wordpress has way more theme choices and one of them is specifically for photos, it is called monogram.

You could keep storing your stuff at webshots, get a photo blog and even get flickr for good measure.

Let me know if you want more info.

Here is my wordpress blog :

http://ebimagephoto.wordpress.com
This is the photo specific blog, but all of them can take pictures, just not featured so large and prominent.

I built mine using Adobe Lightroom. There is a customisable Lightroom Gallery called LRGC. He is up to ver 4, but I found ver 3 work fine for me. The link for LRGC is http://www.lightroomgalleries.com/index.php. You can see the gallery I made for myself at http://photosbyphil.nfxfsx.net/#page/aboutme. To find the galleries click on "Open Menu" along the red strip on the left side.

Well, I think all of your ideas are great and eventually i will learn much more about the benefits of Adobe counterparts like light room.. Way cool Phil , I really like your website and the way you arrange your albums. BTW I do have Lightroom and the whole suite of Adobe CS3, and have purchased Classroom in a book for CS3 as well. Just to mmm okay, lazy to deal with it at the moment .. Anyhoo I have opened a new account with Webshots because it is totally in my price range (Free) and you can upload full photos without compromising your work.

Eventually I'll have something worth looking at **smiles**
