Where to shoot - Zion, Brice Canyon, Arches, ??? - 05-27-2009, 04:44 PM

Driving back east in another week and was thinking about stopping by Zion National Park, Arches, Brice Canyon, ... it's a HUGE area. Can anyone suggest "specific" locations to shoot?

Thanks for any help!

What are you hoping to achieve? Are you into landscape? Wildlife?

The best guide book for this area for landscapes is "Photographing the Southwest" by Laurent Martres - volume 1 covers Southern Utah. Can't recommend it enough but if you give me an idea of what you are after and how much time you have, I can make some recommendations on some not to be missed spots. I LOVE this area.

its all good, Just stop often and enjoy.

Arches is my favorite for specific easily framed subjects. Double window arch is easy hike. As is balancing rock.

There are several good pull outs for photo vistas in Monument Valley too.

Will only be in the area for 2, maybe 3 days max. Main emphasis will be landscape. Wild life would be wonderful, but doubt I will have the time.

I will look into that book. Thanks for any additional info you can provide.

Ok - with such limited time I would skip Zion. You really need to be able to take extra days there to hike up into areas like the Narrows and Angel's landing in order to get decent images.

With that in mind I would definitely hit Bryce. It's an easy drive in and there are lots of opportunities for landscape shots with short hikes or even just from the pull outs.

The Navajo and Queen's Garden Trails near Sunset Point are short hikes with great landmarks and opportunities to capture classic shots. If you are really limited and can only spend one sunrise or one sunset I recommend Sunrise Point. Contrary to the name it is great at both times of day.

Continuing East there are some terrific places along highway 89 heading toward Page, AZ.

After Kanab, UT... at approximately mile 20 you will find a small unmarked pull out on the north side of the road (your left hand side driving from Kanab toward Page. Sign in (the sheet should say something about Toadstools or Mushroom rocks), enter through the cow fence and follow the well worn foot path... sometimes it dips into the dried up river bed... after about 15 minutes, 20 if you walk slow you will find yourself at the Rimrock Hoodoos. These are great any time, morning or evening... one of my all time favorite spots.

Horseshoe Bend is a great place for landscapes too: http://www.travelsw.com/southwest-tr.../horseshoe.htm
