Looking for tips on good photo locations - 05-29-2009, 02:00 PM

Hello,

I am heading down to Southern California (Indio, Palm Springs, etc.) in a couple of weeks for vacation with the family and I was wondering if anyone could help me with some tips for great locations for picture taking. Specifically, I am going to be in the Indio, Palm Springs, Palm Desert area. I Are there any nearby abandoned buildings or old junk? I assume that the desert itself can be nice to shoot too. Ideas?

A few minutes drive to the south of palm springs is salton city, a whole abandoned town. Definitely spooky and worth the drive.
Just take highway 86 south from just east of indio. Can't miss it. On the left of the highway is salton city, and about 10 more minutes down on the right is marina drive. If you take marina drive west off 86, you will run into an off road mecca called truck haven. It's kinda warming up out here, so there may not be a whole lot going on, but you're guaranteed to see some jeeps taking on some crazy obstacles. And if you continue about 10 minutes MORE past N marina drive, you will hit state road 22. turn right, drive about 2 miles and there will be ocotillo wells on your left, where the X games motocross guys film their videos all the time, and bluffs with an awesome view on the opposite side of the highway. With a wide angle lens, you can get some breathtaking shots of ocotillo from the bluffs.
Just google map salton city, and zoom out a bit.

Thanks, Jason!

I went to Salton Sea with my neighbors when I was a kid and I remember riding around in their boat and having them point out the town that was under water. I had heard that the water has been disappearing so I imagine that it isn't under water any more. Are the abandoned places at the north end or the southern end?

I think it's more to the south on the west side.
