Is there much hiking going to be required or are you shooting close to the car?
I'm driving back on Sunday. That will give us two nights of shoot. The hotel is *booked up so you would have to crash with me. Or find a different place. But if you crash with me we could split the cost.

EDIT: I think the hotel is booked, but I could be wrong.

rates are 100/ night. there will be some hiking at most 2miles per hike.... shooting will depends on where we can get. There is one trail I wanna do that's 12 miles but will probably do that one alone and camp at the final location.

I don't think I'm taking my dolly two miles. So I'm' going to be looking for places to shoot a few hundred yards from where we park.

Then I can tell you the hot springs will be out of question... it's a little hike on some not so much fun sand.

Cool -

Cleared with the boss (wife), now to clear my work schedule - I have a mtg in LA on Wed but will probably come home Wed night so I don't expect a problem.

So cost of trip will be ~200 (gas and hotel) + food + cost of getting great tips from Jake and other gurus :)

I need to look into a MC-36, do you think a interverlometer is necessary or will a regular shutter release be fine?

I'm thinking Saturday afternoon we scope out the Santa Elena Canyon area and shoot around there. It's a lot closer to Terlingua than the hot springs anyway so we'll spend less time driving and more time shooting.

That's cool... I thinking sunday if I stay I am gonna hike up Casa Grande and shoot from up there. It's the highest point in BBNP and a trail I have wanted to do every time I was there. Also with the lack of rain Santa Elena Canyon pass might be open and we can actually take the trail into the Canyon.

An intervalometer is nice to have anyway so I would recommend that. But for just taking night photos, a regular remote will work fine.
I'll be taking our honda mini van so it holds plenty of gear and gets OK gas mileage(not great, but not too bad).

It cools down to 80° at night and it's a dry heat. I've hiked in it more times than I can count (or maybe remember).

I cannot stress enough how important water is when you go to BiBe. Get a Camelbak. Fill it before you leave. Have an ice chest FULL of ice and cold water (liters not little piss ant bottles) in your vehicle so that when you drain your camelbak you can fill it full of nice cold water. The cool camelbak will help reduce your body heat and rehydrate you.

Here's a good link for historical, current, and predicted weather- Linkity Link You might need to customize the display to show trends.

Chris- It's not so boring if you take side trips. You can also take the alternate route out of San Antonio and take 90 through Hondo, Sabinal, Uvalde, Bracketville, Del Rio, Comstock, cross the Pecos River (always good to burn a pixel or two on, Langtry, Dryden, Sanderson, and Marathon

Before you kill the Hot Springs idea consider the building shot that I put up. It's in the parking area so you can drive right to it.

This is great advice for anyone that has not been out to BBNP... it is quite hot and shop locations are not close together.

Ya: I was planning on taking that way. I have driven it 4 times... taking both I-10 only and US 90. I was planing on taking US 90 to stop as I dont believe my passenger has ever been out this far past S.A. I will deff be making stops on the way... another reason I am leaving at 3-4am.

Keep me posted on that other thing if yall find it. Would be fun to shoot a few frames too.

Jake - I am a go! :)

Excited to be going and never have been to Big Bend before. I think you mentioned we would be able to share a room and split it.

Do we need to bring food (and perhaps a folding chair for those long shoots)?

Can I leave my car by your place since you are further west? It probably makes more sense for me to come to you.

Chris, You might check with the ranger for sometimes the Casa Grande is closed due to Peregrine activity. Also I believe that Emory Peak is the "highest" point in the park so if "the big house" is closed, you can do the Emory one & back in a day. I've done it several times, but sadly due to health I will never be able to do it again. If you're up to it, it is a great hike & the views from up top are outstanding.
Also if you go through Sabinal stop at the DQ & check out the rattlesnake pics(big Dudes)!

For all of you who have never been before, prepare to become addicted. Unfortunately with the drought, it is less colorful than I've ever seen it in my many trips(Way way longer than I'll admit to), but still a great experience especially if you study the history of the area before you get there! Good luck on your trip & I hope to run into some of you while there.
