"If you do have to take a short walk, take it slow, wear light colors, loose clothing, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and bring a bottle of water."

That's just crossing the parking lot at the grocery store.

Must be written by a wimpy Yankee.

Auto air conditioning?!? Mine hasn't worked in two years. In fact, most vehicles before the early '60s didn't even have factory installed AC...or any AC for that matter. Only the rich had that pleasure.

My what a pampered generation we have become.

I, for one, am very grateful for my AC.

Before moving to Houston I lived in Michigan. There you go out during mid-day in May-October (or most of the year for that purpose.) After moving to Houston, my wife and I went to Galveston on a bright September day around 12 noon. We were really amazed that no one was out enjoying the sun. As soon as we stepped out of our car, we realized why :)

I'm leaving in the AM for Candelaria where the temps have been running in the 110's & up.
Light clothing, two cam rigs on my Cotton Carrier, camelback full of ice water, & walking very SLOWLY, when doing so.
Hill country & Del Rio tomorrow; Study Butte Tuesday: River Rd through Presidio on to Ruidoso; Candelaria; Chinati Springs; & Chinati Canyon Wed.; then Terlinqua, on into BiBe Thur.; Fri. in the park & back to the real hell (Houston) on Sat.
I know, "hot as hell", but that country is my kind of Heaven. I love the "boonies"!!!

I'm going to the grocery store now, before the sun comes up. Only 85°. Not taking any heat precautions, as I expect to be able to park within a couple o' hundred feet of the front door. Ok, here I go, cover me!

I always knew that living in Houston. I find that it's dryer up in Dallas/Fort Worth area and more humid down in Houston. When I got married, I moved up to Fort Worth from Houston with my ex-wife and found that I liked the weather better there. Walking around the park wasn't too bad between those mentioned hours. But I never dared do that in Houston.

I worked in New York for three weeks and was always walking around everywhere in the middle of summer. Humidity was about the same as Houston, but the heat index was lower. When I came back from New York, I stopped by Houston for a week and tried to walk to the gas station about four blocks away. I turned back after the first block and said heck with this and got in my car. That's when I decided to move out of Texas. It wasn't a deciding factor, but it sure helped. Now, I make sure that I don't visit Houston between the months of June - August.

Only in TX that I recommend people not get a east/west facing house.

I'm not really knocking on Texas. I'll visit and often, I just don't want to live there anymore.

All my exes live in Texas,
And that's why I hang my hat in Illinois.

As George Lopez my cousin would say, MAS PUTO!
I use to drive a JD 450 dozer with no canopy or no cover and the HEAT from the engine & sun would toast me up after 7 hours!
I would have to say those were 2 of my HOTTEST years in my life!

later..... drink plenty of beer, I mean WATER and stay COOL!

Louis,
I'm just one of those obnoxious transplanted Texans.

Born in a far away, distant land (South Dakota) but at an early age (22 months) convinced my parents to move to the Great State of TEXAS. The USAF forced me to live in North Dakota for 3 years, but I came back to TEXAS as soon as I could.
