Photo Stops in San Diego? - 08-03-2011, 09:48 AM

Have to go to San Diego for a conference this coming week, and am taking my gear with me. Am staying on Harbor Island in a hotel.

Would like to hear your recommendations for where around the area to take pics at.

Thinking about:
- Running over to Coronado to tak pics back across the bay at night.
- The lighthouse @ Point Loma
- An ocean sunset from Sunset Cliffs

Any cool "not to miss photo stuff"?

Pacific Beach (commonly referred to as PB)
The entire Gaslamp Quarter, in particular the bottom of the hill.
The Hilton in San Diego is a brilliant bit of modern architecture.

The white frame-red roof Victorian hotel used for the setting of an ancient (1980) Peter O'Toole movie, "The Stunt Man". Is it the Hotel Del Coronado? Yes. It is.

Joshua Tree National Park. Might be a bit toasty this time of year. Or cooler than Texas. Who knows?

I personally like the rocky beaches of Imperial Beach where they have the sand castle competitions. :) Coronado is a good one. USS Midway is fun as well. Then the gas lamp district (downtown SD).

Anywhere along the coast is good.

Go to the ferry landing on Coronado to shoot downtown San Diego's skyline.

If you go to Cabrillio National Monument (where the lighthouse is), be prepared for crowds.

The Maritime Museum, along the Embarcadero, is always good for photos.

If you have some time, take a few hours for a trip out to Desert View Tower. It's a mild haul, but you won't find a better view of the desert anywhere.

If you can get up to the Torrey Pines Gliderport, you'll see people hang gliding off the cliffs if the wind is right.

Balboa Park is pretty much a "must see", as well, and there's not a cab driver in San Diego County who doesn't know where it is.

The list of photo ops in San Diego is really pretty endless...

I stumbled up the ferry landing while I was there several yrs ago, wish I had gone back at a better time of day.

There is, or was a trolley that took you around town to all the tourist spots. I got my ticket at the hotel next to the convention center, its the big silvery one that is shaped like two half circles. The same area has a antique ship museum and beautiful sunset view.
