Or down to three key ones from which all others can be derived.

1. Understanding light is 1/2 art, 1/2 science, and 1/2 anticipation.

2. Without shutter time, you'll never improve.

3. The best gear can make your job easier, but not necessarily better. See #2.

It seems amazing to me how many people say "I got a new ____, and I can't tell the difference from the old photos". I think you're more a little likely to see a difference if you buy really good glass compared to really crappy glass, but the monkey behind the camera is the same. The camera doesn't take the photo, the photographer does.
