Upgrading Server - need about 5TB of temporary storage - 08-25-2011, 10:34 AM

I have a Windows Home Server, and I want to upgrade to the new release. I currently have about 6 TB of info on my server - from pictures to backups to movies and CAD files. I have a few extra hard drives laying around to put some of the data on, but I need more.

Since I will be going from server 03 based to server 08 based, and 32 to 64 bit, I need to reformat all my hard drives. Does anyone know of someone in the Houston area who rents storage? I don't really want to spend a few hundred dollars on hard drives just to upgrade my server.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Justin

yeah that is not really practical, but thanks for the tip. It would probably take 4 months or more to upload that much data, and another 2 months to download it :-)

I got a quote from somewhere to rent 7 TB or RAID storage for a week, and it was $795!!! I would be better off spending about $200 on a few 2TB drives, and just piece together the last 1-2 TB with some drives I have laying around. That may be the route I end up going.

Consider the drives as back-ups and move them off-site when you are finished upgrading the server.

Depending on the age of your current drives, it may make sense to buy new ones anyway.

i agree with Coelus, you need to take your the ages of your drives into consideration. Perhaps what you should consider doing is moving to a newer drive, maybe go SSD?

Currently, I have almost all my photos of the past decade located in two different places. As the price gets reasonable, and my various drives ages, I just move them to another location every couple of years. As SSD becomes more affordable, I'll slowly start transferring my data there. Since I just got a 2T mybook, I don't upgrading that for at least a year or so. The data is is also contained on my various other older drives will suffice for now as backups of my backups. :)
