So...who wants to debate the differences between a purchased Beauty Dish vs a DIY made from a mixing bowl?

Helluva lot easier to stamp it and then roll the edges in another press. Same way you make the cheap bbq dome grills. The shape is the critical thing, not the process by which it is formed.

The only thing that really matters is the image. How you get there, whether you build your own camera or beauty dish, or you order it from the internet, doesn't matter much.

Both are correct.

Yea I got school today about how mixing bowls were made by a friend of mine who works at a shop that had a spinner. I saw all sorts of bowls and my Speedotron Beauty Dish came to mind.

There is a difference. If you've ever directly compared a DIY, Paul Buff, Hensel, and Mola. It's clear to see that physics and engineering win over homegrown.

(I now work for a company that makes lighting for the mass transit industry. Talking with a couple of PhD's about light quality and reflector design can open a photographer's eyes even more...)
