To expand on the Han Solo role:

Quote:
Nine other actors were considered for the role of Han Solo. They were Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Chevy Chase, Nick Nolte, Steve Martin, Kurt Russell, Perry King and Bill Murray. George Lucas didn't want to use an actor he had worked with before (Harrison Ford was in American Graffiti (1973)) but he knew he was the one for the role after he read for the part.

Steve Martin as Hans Solo.....complete with banjo and arrow? Whole new twist on things with that implanted in the brain....(if you aren't familiar with early Steve Martin and SNL, this won't mean much)

Now when he was a young man
He never thought he'd see
A person named Darth Vader
And a club in Mos Eisley

Did Yoda make you braver?
You build your own light sabre?
Born on Tattooine
His Mother was a queen
King Tut

...clearly needs a little work but you get the idea...

Jake Gyllenhaal almost got Batman over Christian Bale. Would have been kinda funny if his sister played his love interest in the Dark Knight.

Jason Schwartzman was offered the role of Donnie Darko over Jake Gyllenhaal.

Marky Mark turned down the starring role of Brokeback Mountain, because he couldn't handle the sex scenes.

Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, and Leonardo DiCaprio were all attached or turned down the lead in American Psycho.

Will Smith turned down the role of Neo in the Matrix. On a plus side, he also turned down the obligation to reprise it in the second and third Matrix movies. However, he turned it down to do Wild, Wild West.

Harrison Ford turned down the role of Oscar Schindler.

Cary Grant turned down Connery's Bond role.

Darryl Hannah turned down the role of the hooker in Pretty Woman and she was never heard from again.

Mel Gibson was offered the role of Maximus. He was also offered Keaton's Batman but was doing LW2

Tom Hanks turned down the part of Andy in Shawshank (he did get a nice consolation prize in getting so star in Forrest Gump)

Salt was supposed to be about Edwin Salt starring Tom Cruise, but Cruise backed out because it was too similar to mission impossible
