How Do You Photograph Strangers on the Street? - 09-07-2011, 06:21 AM

Yesterday Chris (Snarfy) posted a video, How Not to Do Street Photography, in which the photog was catching a lot of flack for his style of street photography.

Here is another photog with a similar but slightly less "in your face" style.

cool video.

I went up and asked these homeless guys in Austin, offering them $10 for a photo (and I had to send it to his mom).

The sign was the main reason I found these guys so interesting...

Sometimes all you have to do is ask:

Wow... who knew there was a Lenny Kravitz conference in town, eh?

Also, the homeless guys: One has taste and the other doesn't.

This is an example of people that are protesting and videotaping themselves (!), take issue with anyone else photographing from across the street.

They're in downtown EVERY WEEKEND.

These guys need to get a better hobby.

Has anyone who takes photos of people in public without asking ever been photographed? I was in LA a month ago and noticed someone in a park taking photos of people including myself. He was sitting on a bench with a long lens. Honestly I wasn't ok with it but I didn't say anything because I knew it was a discussion not worth having or winning.

This is still not as creepy as people in airports taking pictures as people walk by. Fine line I suppose.

I think i'm doing the same.. Well actually without people noticing i know it's kinda creepy... As a stylist photographer in Los Angeles i've been doing it.. For some purposes of course... But sometimes you have to ask...

Seriousy though there isn't really anything you can do right? (with regards to public photogrpahy) as long as they don't slander your name / picture.

I think it's a fine line as well because I can see both sides.

1. There isn't an expectation of privacy in "public places".
2. You just want to shoot pictures.
