Dexter; now I know. - 09-22-2011, 03:45 PM

OK, so now I know who this Dexter is; a character in some movie or TV show. I wear a badge, and ride patrol as a photo/fingerprint unit. Now, I understand why people keep assuming I must know ALL about Dexter, and walk away, shaking their heads, when I say "Dexter who?" The problem is, I am not a fan of any TV show. I don't know if Dexter is America, European, African, or animated, but now know he is a TV character who photographs crime-related things.

My TV is a Panasonic DVD player, and if I watch more than one DVD in a week, it is an unusual event. I reckon I am boring.

Dexter is an HBO series, and a pretty good one. I just hope they are not calling you Dexter. See, he is a sociopath. He kills those who get away with crimes. He believes them to be guilty because, aside from being a sociopath, he is a forensics examiner. He's worked the case. He's seen the evidence. He knows how the police operate.

I love Dexter, but in no way would I compare anyone to him....regardless of similarities in occupation.
That aside...how do you feel about your job? Do you enjoy what you do? i have always been interested in the field (before all the BS on TV).

HBO starts off it's description of Dexter as "A very likable guy..." so a comparison wouldn't really be that bad. Truth is, his character is very likable. The fact that he is a serial killer and yet people like him shows just how likable he is. It's actally one of my favorite shows. Probably because he shoots with a Nikon

Just looked at a hand made chopping knife and asked the guy who made it if he was selling it to a forensic fellow named Dexter.

The best show on TV. Have the first 5 seasons on DVD and waiting anxiously for the 6th season to start so we can have some Dexter watching parties!

OK, so if Dexter is a forensic investigator, that is much more like my wife, who really does do that for a living, and she uses Nikons, too. She was an Oympus fan, in the film era, but now really likes digital Nikons.

Stephene, I basically do like my job, though parts if it are sickening, so it is a love-hate thing. One of the more bothersome aspects is that depriving someone of their freedom is a major stressor. Being a photo/fingerprint unit tends to lessen that part of the job, as other officers handle the arrests. I concentrate on trying to record very good images of injuries and evidence, the former being a combination of elements of portraiture and macro photography. One Canon 7D is virtually always paired with a 100mm 2.8L Macro lens, and the other 7D usually has a 35mm 1.4L mounted. Working nights favors fast glass, and I work straight
nights.

I am, however, still a first responder. Being the first to arrive on an in-
progress emergency call, after a zooming down a freeway at nearly twice the speed limit*, is still a thrill, though I am getting too old to physically mix it up with bad guys these days, so getting in over my head is a concern. Strategy and tactics take priority; better to coordinate a containment perimeter, and let the younger bucks move in make the arrest. Not that I am elderly, but I turn 50 next month, and one knee feels like 100 sometimes.

By the way, I learned about Dexter when Amazon brought up the DVD set as a recommendation, probably based on our searches for photography stuff and forensic books.

*Only certain straight and level stretches of freeway, with plenty of sight distance, allow for driving so fast.
