question for shotgun experts - 09-25-2011, 10:26 PM

My dad just came into possesion of 4 antique firearms.

an m-1840 springfield
an L.C. Smith 12 ga. side by side double hammer made in 1919
an L.C. Smith 10 ga. side by side double hammer made in 1919

and one yet unidentified 16 ga. side by side double hammer pinfire.

My question is about the 16 ga: I cannot make out the top engraving that is between the barrels due to wear. Best I can discern it is
" J. REIN in ???????????????"

I have found very few references to "J. REIN IN MARCKTHEIDENFELD" on google, but they do not match the pinfire shotgun that I have.

These are a fairly new aquisition, and we are just trying to ascertain the value

Agree about the pics. My FIL knows all about guns (probably owns 25 shotguns alone). I'll ask him tomorrow, but a pic would help.

These are just quick iPhone pics

Undoubtably the name on the top of the gun between the barrels is J. REIN in whatever the name of that German town is called

Now just want to see if I can find an approximation of when it was made and general value

Yep -- got it -- and that was the only sight that I found as well.

Thank you!

It's going to date back to mid-1800s. The website I found had one by the same manufacturer, J REIN, but it looked to be in better condition. Auction price was 450 Euro minimum (about $600).

Price could double or triple easily depending on wood fit & lock-up.
