I hate to be the bearer of bad news but most of us are going to die if the world ends. We kind of need the world... if for no other reason than it gives us a warm(er) place to stand than space.
Here's the really bad news. Most people are ill equipped to survive a true meltdown. There are plenty of scam artists out there that will take your money and sell you some pretty bizarre and worthless items. You can buy seeds but it you've never gardened before you'll be lucky to live long enough to see the seeds come up, if they even come up. You can stock up on ammo and guns all you want but you can't eat or drink ammo and guns... you can, however, shoot your neighbor and take all of their stuff

so there is an upside. It would be better to find a group of multi-disciplined people, hope that they don't think you would taste good with carrots and potatoes in a white sauce, and try be a productive member of a team than it would to try to go solo.
It cracks me up when I hear the "crisis garden" commercials. Up until the drought did mine in I had a nice little "practice" garden going. It had full time drip irrigation and once we hit non-stop 100° days it would set blooms (various vegetables) but not produce fruit. So, if the world had gone to h e double toothpicks around July things would have been pretty grim around here. Maybe my 2012 garden will be better.
Water, food, and shelter. Those are the important things. The first makes TX a not so great place to be right now. I have a water well. In a worst case scenario there would be no electricity so no water for me. Food... I already mentioned the state of my garden so it's either the neighbors cows or the neighbors. Except most of them are from the city... so they aren't likely to make it back here in time for supper

if the world melts down. They'll likely feed some of the more enterprising city dwellers.
There are some
Off the Grid movements out there. A lot of them miss the mark and focus on alternative energy. Water and food... those two things will decide most peoples fate.
You know what really hacks me off? The thought of not having electricity. How am I supposed to charge my camera battery without electricity? My computer won't work without electricity so I won't be able to download my images and process them... And I won't be able to post them. That's just plain nonsense...
