Survival gear/End of the world as we know it thoughts - crazy ideas? - 10-02-2011, 09:39 PM

Random idea after finding myself on a website that was selling tablets in case of nucleaur events...and 'seed pods' in case life as we know it goes to heck.

Also part of a conversation I had with a couple of attorneys that I work with - about the likelihood that we could be having a significant drought period here in the south....and about the government taking 'ownership of water rights'...

My husbands a pretty inventive guy...and my parents live on enough land, with water, ongoing farming and walking steaks to feed us for a long time... but anyone else out there getting vibes that maybe being a 'bit' prepared for the crap hitting the fan MIGHT be a good idea?

Thought it'd make an interesting topic to discuss...

There was a special on the History Channel a few weeks ago about what North America will be like in 100 years. The outlook for the southwest looked pretty bleak... Depressing, actually...

You can pretty much find water anywhere if you know where to look. Getting it clean is another matter. Not sure if you can still buy it (apparently, it is now regulated because you can use it to make meth or something), but Polar Pure is great stuff for water purification.

It's crystallized iodine that you pour water into (this water doesn't have to be 'clean'). You use the resulting iodine solution to purify water. Directions are on the bottle.

Better than chlorine tabs - those don't kill everything, iodine does.

I'm probably more prepared than most, but not nearly as much as some.

My priorities are: A way to make water clean, a way to make fire, and ammo - lol.

(Over-simplified, but that's the general gist of it.)

I bought 2 tons of powdered water and an all crabmeat spaceship, just in case I need to get out of here. I am ready for anything.

when is the next rapture supposed to be? I will be prepared with a business this time - like those smart guys who got paid for taking care of your pets after you got raptured... no money back if you weren't raptured, sorry.

Ammo is definitely good to have... For a variety of reasons. My brother has a reloader. ;-)

Think about it... During hurricane Rita the mass exodus resulted in tons of people being stranded because of fuel resources being tapped out. That was just a dang hurricane... Fuel will be a really expensive commodity that most of us simply don't have the capacity to store more than a tank and a few 5 gallon canisters.

I can barely prepare for the weekend, so there is no way I'll be ready for the end of the world!
But more importantly, I have far more real things to worry about, things that are happening here and now.
People that I know that are "end of the world" type have been since the 80's. They always have good reason that it will happen in the next 10 years, it use to freak me out as a kid but now I just smile and nod.
If you look back though history there were far worst time that could of been considered "end of the word" times. Had I lived in Germany during the 40's, or during the Crusades, or spanish inquisition, or heck, anytime during the old testament, then I might be getting prepared. Those were "end of the world" times!

But anyway, I'm not concerned with it and I'm not preparing for it.
I'll just thank God that I live in the time and place I live in. Because there is no other time in history or location that I'd rather live, than in the USA right now.

and about the government taking 'ownership of water rights'
That has already happened in a lot of places. Check out the Harris County Subsidence District to see one of the unnoticed ways that it happens.

I bought the new, improved, concentrated version. You only use half a packet. And it was on sale.

Sometimes I really wonder if the Mayan's weren't on to something after all, but as stated above one has to keep this into perspective. Things have been bad, really bad, before. Far worse even. World War I was horrendous. World War II was horrendous. The 70s were economically worse than today. The crusades were terrible.

Personally I think a certain media outlet and a certain radio talk show host or two are really, really over-blowing how bad things are. There is a lot of fear mongering going on, and most of the perps are profiting from it.

So no, I'm not preparing for a collapse of society.
