Moody Gardens Pyramids - 10-06-2011, 03:49 PM

Has anybody taken photos inside the Moody Gardens Pyramids?? If so, how bad is the lighting. What are the possibilities of getting any keepers using a Nikon D7K with the 16-85, f3.5-5.6.

Jack

Edit: I forgot ro mention that we will be touring the Rainforest Pyramid. Maybe I should take my fuji X100.

Anybody have any thoughts?

The pyramid can be fun to shoot, but it is not simple. You have to watch out as you can get extreme backlighting. That said other areas are very dark, but you can get some very good photos. Some of the monkeys can be very photogenic and will pose very well for you. Many of the birds will pose as well, but many will stay high in the canopy and be very backlit. I was there a couple of weeks ago.

Also the pyramid is very warm and very humid so your equipment may fog up when you enter the pyramid.

You'll need something faster to get a high % of good images, altho with careful planning you can get good ones at 3.5. I used the 70-200/2.8, the biggest issue I had was that some subjects were actually too close. There are lots of good macro subjects as well. But as Scott mentioned, watch the sun angles. No flash is allowed.

Thanks guys. Wish I still had my 70-200 2.8. Hopefully the D7K high ISO capabilities will help save the day. I still might take the fuji with its 2.0 lens even though its a fixed focal length of 23mm (35mm equivalent).
