Lending equipment to friends - 10-07-2011, 11:48 AM

I stopped lending equipment to family and friends long ago, but in an effort to not be a total douche, I tried to accommodate someone this morning. However, I detected a tad bit bitchiness in the reply to my offer of a film camera and free film(which I thought was super effing generous).

First off, I received the text at 6:55am. That's annoyingly early. Then, the reply almost made me want to rescind the offer and tell them to go fly a kite. Sure, I have a 7D and 5D II and some lenses. This does not mean I lend them out, even to friends. I did lend my dad my 70-200 2.8 IS II once to video a church service, but I knew the environment was safe, and it was MY DAD. I think from now on my reply is going to be that all of my equipment is on standby and I really can't spare any of it.

I don't read any tone in it, other than 'Yeah, sure, that would be great. I really appreciate it.'

The problem with texting is that you have no idea which way that was meant. It could be sincere or it could be sarcastic. I wouldn't jump the gun on bitching at them. Maybe ask when they'd like to pick it up, and see if they blow you off. Then you know they were being sarcastic.

Otoh, if I used the equipment professionally, the tools of my trade would not be available.

Ha. I tried to edit the post, but replied to it instead. When I corrected that, I forgot the original. Ima maroon.

If your intent was to hide their names in that screenshot, you need to blacken it out more. I can clearly read them.

Fixed.

I sure hope you guys are right. I'll text the 'when would you like to pick it up' question. I guess I just expect snarkyness too much.

Are you saying that was a sarcastic reply? I can't tell because that looks like something I would say if I was being serious.
You know that person better than us though so maybe he is being I jerk, but I wouldn't of thought that by reading that text.

I don't think it was sarcastic, just possibly a little dismissive. I don't know.

At least he didn't say "OK, sure, if you don't mind developing it and scanning it for me also" . That's what I hate, when you do someone a favor and they ask for even more...

If I were to see that screenshot and commentary on, say, facebook and not here - I would assume that the poster was being passive aggressive and was trolling for snarky replies.

Sounds more like disappointment that you didn't offer your 5D or 7D....

There is a reason that I put many, many friends into Canon gear. I shoot Nikon.

That is so wrong...look at your cellular signal! ;)

Glen has it right...to some extent. :)

Bitchiness...no...sarcasm....a tad...I'd still be showing on your door to pick up your 5d2 :)
