While I get the humor related to comments like this, I often feel somewhat torn by these types of comments. It seems to me that the situation wouldn't even exist if the photographers would stop doing work for free. I mean, I'm sure there would be customers asking lawyers to do free work if lawyers did a lot of free work to give customers that impression to begin with. Since the lawyers don't do that, their customers don't have that perception and it's a moot point.

I think the comparison is a tad off I don't know many hobbiest lawyers.

Perhaps the specific comparison is off, but the idea remains. If there wasn't a market for free work, people wouldn't expect it.

If food didn't fall from the dining room table, my dog wouldn't know to look there for it.

I get your point and I mostly agree and I'm playing devils advocate here...

But I don't think it's always as black and white as people make it.

I get your point. I thing a more apt comparison might be computer repair. Seems every one thinks they are a system administrator. Everyone wants free computer repair. I give them the number to Nerds on Call.

One of the most common questions is about a broken printer. They get offended when I tell them to turn it on.

That happens to me a lot. I use Linux, so people automatically think I'm some kind of computer genius (I'm not) because 'Linux is for geeks'. I know how to maintain my computer and keep it running good and all that, but my skills don't go much farther than that.

Maybe 15 years ago I was pretty skilled at anything computer related, but a lot has changed since then and I haven't kept up to date.

I know how to do very basic things in Windows, but any more than that - I pretty much have to resort to Google. (And I still have to Google some stuff for Linux too...)

I get people wanting me to 'fix' their computer, and all I can really tell them is 'switch to Linux and I might be able to fix it'. LOL
I hate telling that to people though, because usually it's people that would go out and buy hardware, peripherals, or games without checking compatibility first - then my phone would be ringing again to go make their new stuff work. (Which might not even be possible...)

So, I just say - 'I can't fix it - take it to a shop'.

I know plenty. There are always plenty of legal hobbyists willing to offer free legal advice. There are always plenty of photographic hobbyists willing to shoot free pictures.

Perhaps a Bar exam for photographers.

Yup totally agree, but I also think that idiots should also have a remote "off" button installed...... or a bolt rifle... so Im probably not giving the right answer.

Whilst I did my trade I had and even now get heaps of people wanting things at "mates rates" or free or for a carton of grog. Electricians and the likes here can name their price here but if they want it enough then someone will pay it.
Photographers here I think it runs on both extremes, some charge heaps and some do the hobbiest thing and charge stuff all.

Thanks for having a look.
