my 7d with 70-200 slipped out of my bag as I was moving it off the hotel room bed onto the floor and landed just the wrong way. wasn't a hard fall, didn't even thunk, but the lens managed to yank the lens mount off the body, stripped out 3 screws and ripped out a hunkof plastic the fourth screw was attached to!

I have a backup camera to see me through my commitments, but I've never had to deal with this before.

anyone know how much canon will charge to repair? and how long it would take?

rotten luck, I'm traveling and only brought one body, so I'm done shooting for this trip :(

at least I got one day worth of Porsche 928 shots.

thanks!

Join Canon CPS silver (free) or gold($100) and get 20-30% off your repair bill. Then contact Canon CPS and send in your equipment to get it repaired... I am assuming you want to keep your equipment and not wanting to upgrade to say a Canon 5dmarkII :)

or get a personal articles policy through your insurance company. I pay a little over 200 bucks a year for 20k's worth of insurance that is zero deductable, any incident anywhere in the world, full replacment value. I know that doesnt help you now, but it could in the future.

I talked to my insurance guy about that when I got my 300 2.8, and he told me they didn't cover camera gear... never went back to it. guess it's time to revisit.

a personal articles policy covers whatever you want to put under it. I have most of my camera gear, the laptop I use when I travel, and my iPad.

I'm not full time either, but I'm one 'body over 20d' short on the gear requirements. Ah well. at least I happen to be 20 miles from the Irvine repair center, and can just drop the thing off tomorrow.

I understand how the personal articles policy works, but the insurance company I'm with specifically excludes camera gear. I had to purchase extra for my personal technology that I use at home. (ya, I was really surprised when I took inventory of all the software I have purchased over the years, and all the computer gear I have, that I was WELL over the their 'standard policy' amount)

Time to shop for new insurance. But even so, I imagine this is a pretty common failure mode for the camera, and they can probably estimate how much it will cost.

Ah, I see. I wasnt trying to imply that you didnt know how a personal articles policy works, I was really just being factual. Its one of my personality traits. Im with State Farm if it helps to know.
