I seem to recall that with the administrator password you could get into the Mac libraries containing the passwords. Once there I also recall a check box show password. Possibly, if using a Mac, you can get the path to the library containing that password and simply click show password.
I have used this method to get forgotten router passwords.

I don't recall exactly where it is in iTunes, but there is a provision to recover all applications you have purchased through the App Store. I had to go through the process when I had a hardware problem and the Applecare rep walked me through it. It even brought up the Apps I had deleted.

I would give Applecare a call and get some assistance doing it while you have the phone attached to your computer.

I did not have a problem with the encrypted backup when my iPhone 4 updated to iOS 5, but there were some other preferences that changed without me doing so. I think they must have been associated with the change to iCloud (which I have not used) because it dumped the bookmarks I had on the phone (backed up) and brought in all the ones from Safari on my Mac (which are way too many to navigate on an iPhone).

Good Luck

Since I upgraded rigs, I copied all my apps over to the new rig and imported them into iTunes, so the core apps are there. Just none of the app info is there. I have quite a few passowrds to recover and whatnot.

I hope you have your passwords & so on saved on your computer so that you can at least enter them manually on the iPhone without having to go to the web site and hit the "I don't remember" button. I am not aware of a way to recover the passwords from a backup of the iPhone...and I asked a lot.

There are a couple of Apps that you may want to look into to save the passwords on the iPhone in the future. One that comes to mind is 1Password.

I can sympathize with you having been through this.

I use safe note. It has a function to email all notes within the app for this exact situation. I had forgotten but I did do just that a few months ago. I'm out only a few passwords that I have to recover. So, it's not as bad as I thought when I first posted this thread. Still going to be a PITA to get all my contacts back.
