I needed to replace the CR123A batteries in an EOTech and all I could find was CR123's. I googled CR123 vs CR123A. I found:
(1) Candlepower forum. Pretty interesting place. It's all about lights, leds, batteries, etc. I didn't join but it was still interesting
(2) Electronic cigarette forum

there's a forum for that?
I found a post that answered my question on the E cigarette forum.
They call regular cigarettes analogs

I guess that's better than cancer stick.
Here's the post:

The proper term is CR123A. This stands for cylindrical shape and lithium chemistry (CR), a single cell (1), that is 2/3 the size of an A cell (23A). This designation is for a primary cell.
16340 is 16 mm X 34 mm 0 = round, simply a size designation and nothing about the actual battery, or if it's protected or not.
