Are lenses ever on sale

I've finally pulled the money together to purchase Nikon's 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII lens. With all the various holiday sales going on, I'm looking for a good deal. However, do these pretty lenses every go on sale?

There are rebates once a year or every other year or so, but never a big sale deal.

Don't expect too much on top of the line lenses...you could always try the used market.

This is pretty much what I figured. =) If I didn't see anything from BH for black friday, I didn't have much hope for cyber monday.

With Nikon's factory still underwater in Taiwan don't expect to see much in sales or bargains for a while. The demand is much larger than the supply and will most likely stay that way for at least several more months.

Given that Nikon has sent a memo out last month or so having their retailers to sell at MSRP, I dont suspect the 70-200 VR II will be on sale anytime soon. If it is on sale, it'll require a purchase of a body to get an instant rebate.

on the high ticket items you will rarely see it on "sale" for more than like 50-100 off. with canon they usually rebate when you do combo purchases but thats about it.

You're best bet is getting your hands on some promo codes from the purchasing web sites to get 5% off or free shipping etc.
