On my 3rd one now... #2 and #3 courtesy of Canon warranty service after #1 and #2 broke apart.
The problems tend to happen if:
- you store it with a filter on it... (stickes out past the center lens tube when fully retracted, and the center tube gets any form of side to side impact)
- a filter gets stuck (a little twisting torque trying to loosen one, that cracks the center tube mounts)
- if its mounted on your camera with the Canon lens hood on it and you set the camera down... (lens hood extends below the bottom plane of the camera and lens causing upward torque on the center tube)
Bottom line, the center tube is slid into position and basically snaps into place with some form of very flimsy internal clip action, and it doesnt take very much to crack one of them.
Dont get me wrong, I do love the lens, but would love an old school Mk1 version.
Right now, my pennies are in saving mode for a 7D or whatever Canon brings out next in the similar price range, once production of new stuff begins back in the AP ring countries.
