San Angelo, TX - The steaks are about the only good thing in that town.
Three places:
Zentner's Daughters (make sure you ask for a bowl full of crutons - trust me) - get the steak KC style.
Twin Buttes Steakhouse - out on the SW side. Great food. Special sauces available for fries/etc.
Lawake steakhouse - actually about 30 minutes out of town. (pronounced La Wake Ee - the name of the crossroads town it's in)
Oh, and all 3 are way cheaper than you would expect - costs way less than Saltgrass.

There also used to be a place in Somerville - called the Somerville Steakhouse or something like that (right on the highway next to the motel). Some of the biggest & best steaks ever. Sadly it looks like it closed last year.
We would make the 1 hour trip there a few times a year just for the steaks (and then stop for ice cream in Brenham on the way home)

Kirby's Prime Rib is to die for. You do have to call ahead to reserve one. It is on par with my other favorite pink meat. Simply the best.
I agree on Mortons and Ruth Chris on Filets and Strips.

Come to my house, I'll only charge you a 12 pack of shiner and you'll get the best steak in 300 miles.

Another vote for Taste of Texas. You get to choose which cow to slaughter for your steak, it's that good

I love steak, but no steak is worth $40 to me. If I want steak in Houston I get the Mesquite grilled steaks at Jax on Shepherd or Goode Taqueria on Kirby. Goodes steaks have great seasoning. Had a great steak the other night at Rajun Cajun off all places. Spaghetti Western on Shepherd does a pretty damn good steak as well. For slightly more upscale I like Raven Grill on Bissonette. The best steak deal though is the awesome Flatiron steak at Barnabys for $10.
There seems to be a bit of a dearth of midrange steak places in Houston. Back in Denver there is a place called "Lukes, a steak place" that serves steaks in the $25-35 range including sides. It was one of my favorite places to go, laid back atmosphere and excellent steaks. That kind of place seems non-existent in Houston.
I miss the old HoffBrau that used to be on Shepherd ( now replaced by Saltgrass). Hoff had a jerk seasoned steak that was killer.

The only other place I really enjoyed was Papa's Brothers in Dallas. Great service and wonderful food.

Dallas
I've been been to
1. Nick and Sams
2. Dakotas
3. Kirbys
4. Mortons
5. Del Friscos
6. III forks
7. Capital Grille
8. Bobs
9. Pappa Bros
10. Abacus
11. Sambuca's
12. Lawrys
I would say I always go back to Capital Grille and Dakota's. I always get a bone-in ribeye almost rare. Trust me, gf and I set out to try to find good steaks one year and literally went almost every week. Those are semi-fancy places, for down and dirty good ribeyes...Texas roadhouse.

Side note: I popped the question there as the ball dropped for New Year's countdown. Two years later they still remember us and give us complimentary drinks.
